“You can be whatever you want to be.”

It’s such a common concept in the United States–the Land of Opportunity–that it seems as though this phrase is ingrained in our national soul.

It’s something that I’ve always felt in my heart was true, but when I stop to think about it, I can’t remember an instance where anyone actually told me that I could be whatever I wanted to be. For many lucky students in Dallas, I feel confident they will remember when someone did just that, and that someone was a man named Lucas Remmerswaal.

Lucas “couch surfed” his way into Dallas on November 16th and the elementary school students whose classes he visited will never be the same. Lucas is a man on a mission, literally, with his four page Mission Statement (that he reads out loud to himself every morning and every night), to inspire students to achieve; to inspire them to change their habits and most importantly, to let them know that they CAN BE whatever they want to be!

Operation HOPE and Banking on Our Future Dallas are on a mission as well. In addition to providing financial education, we strive to impart the students we teach with a sense of empowerment, responsibility, and most importantly, Hope. Teaching the basics of financial literacy is easy, but it’s not always so easy to inspire hope among the students we serve.

Thank you Lucas Remmerswaal for the message of HOPE you shared with the students of Dallas.
