Graduates of Operation HOPE’s financial workshops aren’t just smarter thanks to our free money management workshops. With the encouragement of our staff and volunteers, HOPE students move on with a greater sense of their own abilities and self-worth.
Last Thursday, Operation HOPE joined with Neighborhood Trust Financial Partners (NTFP), a Washington Heights-based community development credit union, to honor the second class of students from our “Getting Ahead” program. The twelve clients have attended classes every Thursday for the last five weeks at Operation HOPE’s Harlem center, where they learned important tips to take control of their finances. Students left the program with a better understanding of credit, financial services, saving, and their own financial plans and goals for the future.
The Getting Ahead program is designed to provide participants with the tools and support to take control of their financial futures. The curriculum not only focused on financial literacy basics, like tricks for saving and building good credit. Students were encouraged to envision their own financial potential once they gained the knowledge necessary to build their own wealth and create opportunities for themselves.
Graduates learned to take advantage of one-on-one counseling from the credit advisor and to open up a free checking or savings account with NTFP, who will continue to work with the graduates and share the results with Operation HOPE. Counselors like Cruz A. Rodriguez, LMSW, a financial advisor at NTFP, worked tirelessly to ensure that students would leave feeling both knowledgable and empowered for a better future.
