TIAA-CREF Gives Back to Local Youth in Waltham Massachusetts

As part of TIAA-CREF‘s mission to give back to the local communities in which they operate, nine TIAA-CREF volunteers last Friday visited the McDevitt Middle School in Waltham, MA to teach Operation HOPE’s financial literacy curriculum to 125 middle school students.

This is the first Banking on Our Future (BOOF) workshop HOPE has offered in Waltham. In the fall, TIAA-CREF will be organizing another BOOF event at another one of their locations in Cambridge, MA.

TIAA-CREF volunteer Andrea Owens reflected on her experience, describing the workshop as “an investment in the future” that will give the students economic empowerment and teach them basic financial rights, and responsibility. Volunteer Brad Cote, meanwhile explained that what he taught the students will “dispel the belief many of the students had that if you didn’t pay your credit card, you go directly to jail.”
